Fresh Floral Care
Follow these easy maintenance tips to extend the life of your blooms and enjoy them a little longer!
If you received a fresh floral arrangement (lucky you!) first open the packet and dissolve the flower food in warm water in your favorite vase. Make sure the vase is clean and adequate for the height and weight of the flowers. Cut the stems at an angle. This exposes the stems to drink water more efficiently. Make sure there are no leaves below the water line as this will encourage bacterial growth which will then shorten the life span of the flowers.
Change the water often. This is one of the most important tips I can offer. Bacteria will grow and cloudy the water which will inevitably start the decaying process of the flowers. If you can, change the water every day. The water can be flushed out by putting the vase under running water in the sink. Do this gently as not to damage the petals of the flowers. If possible, give your stems a fresh cut every other day or so.
Never place the arrangement in direct sunlight for an extended period of time. The heat will cause the flowers to wilt. Place your blooms away from fruit; ethylene gases released from the fruit will cause the flowers to decay faster.
In the evening, put your flowers to rest in the coolest part of your home.
Trick - Recycle an empty spray bottle by thoroughly washing and refill it with clean warm tap water. Lightly and gently mist your flowers once a day or when the weather is particularly hot. Flowers love to stay hydrated!
